Blocked drain or toilet: what to try before calling a plumber

Safe steps for a blocked sink, shower or toilet: hot water, plunger, sink trap and hair removal, what to avoid, and when a plumber is needed.

khalasna guide5 min readUpdated 25 Oct 2026

For a blocked sink, shower, floor drain or toilet, the first steps are hot (not boiling) water and a plunger, then cleaning the sink trap or pulling out hair. If several drains are slow at once, water comes up in the shower when the toilet is flushed, or there is a sewage smell, it is time to stop and call a plumber.

Most blockages in Saudi homes come from cooking grease, hair, soap, wet wipes and food scraps. A blockage close to the drain can often be cleared in 15–30 minutes. A blockage deep in the main line needs a plumber with proper tools.

Find where the blockage is

What happensLikely causeWhat to do
One kitchen sink is slowGrease and food in the trap or nearby pipeHot water, plunger, clean the trap
One shower or floor drain is slowHair and soapRemove hair, then plunge
Toilet drains slowly, other drains are fineToo much paper, wipes or an objectFlange plunger; no repeated flushing
Several drains slow at the same timeBlocked branch or main line, or a full septic tankPlumber, building management or tank emptying
Bad smell from a floor drain, but water flowsDry trap (no water seal)Pour water into the drain regularly

In an apartment building, the landlord or building management should hear about it first when more than one drain is affected. Apartments share vertical stacks, and a blockage in the common line is usually the building's job to clear.

Safe things to try

The order goes from the gentlest method to the more hands-on one.

  1. Hot water for kitchen grease. A kettle of hot water poured slowly into the sink in two or three rounds. Hot, not boiling: boiling water can soften PVC pipes and loosen joints. This helps only with fresh grease, not with food or hair.
  2. A plunger. A cup plunger for sinks and floor drains, a flange plunger (with a rubber sleeve at the bottom) for toilets. For a basin, a wet cloth over the overflow hole sends the pressure into the blockage. A little water in the basin or bowl lets the plunger seal; then 10–15 firm pushes and pulls.
  3. Clean the trap under the sink. The U-shaped or bottle trap catches most sink blockages. With a bucket underneath, the plastic nuts unscrew by hand; the trap is emptied, rinsed, refitted and tested for drips.
  4. Remove hair from shower and floor drains. With the grating lifted and gloves on, hair comes out by hand or with a cheap plastic drain hook. This alone fixes most slow shower drains.

A toilet should not be flushed again and again to "push it through". If the bowl is already high, one more flush can overflow onto the floor. Plunging comes first, flushing only after the water level drops. A blocked toilet with a bidet spray (shattaf) nearby needs extra care to keep water away from sockets.

What to avoid

  • Mixing chemical drain cleaners. Different products can react and release dangerous fumes. A second product should never go on top of the first.
  • Plunging after chemicals. Chemical still in the pipe can splash onto skin and eyes.
  • Pouring cooking oil into the sink. Oil cools and hardens further down the pipe. Cooled oil goes into a bottle and then into the rubbish.
  • Flushing wet wipes. Even wipes sold as "flushable" do not break down like toilet paper.
  • Opening pipes beyond the sink trap. Joints inside walls and floors are easy to crack and hard to reseal.

When to call a plumber

  • Several drains are slow at the same time: the main line may be blocked.
  • Water comes up in the shower or floor drain when the toilet is flushed.
  • A sewage smell inside, or a villa's inspection chamber outside is full or overflowing.
  • The home uses a septic tank rather than the sewer network and all drains slow down together: the tank may need septic tank pumping.
  • A chemical drain cleaner was already used and the water is still standing. The plumber needs to know which product, for safety.
  • The blockage returns every few weeks. A sagging pipe or grease build-up may need a machine.
  • Water leaks under the sink or through the ceiling of the floor below; that is leak detection, not only a blockage.

What drain unblocking costs

On a fixed-price booking app in Riyadh, clearing a blocked wash basin is listed at SAR 89 and a blocked toilet or floor drain at SAR 99, with spare parts extra and a visit charge of SAR 29 if no service is booked after inspection. Saudi price guides give about SAR 100–250 for a sink, SAR 150–400 for a bathroom and SAR 300–1,000 for a main line. The price depends on:

  • Where the blockage is. A sink trap is quick; a blocked main line or a line between the villa and the inspection chamber takes longer.
  • Equipment. A hand snake costs less than an electric drain machine or water jetting, which are usually quoted after inspection.
  • Access. Pipes behind tiles, or in a building with fixed working hours, take more time.
  • Repairs. A cracked pipe or leaking joint is plumbing repair on top of the unblocking.

The price should be confirmed before work starts, and anything outside the agreed job approved first. The checklist for hiring a home service pro covers what else to ask.

How to prevent the next blockage

  • Scrape plates into the bin before washing, and use a sink strainer in the kitchen.
  • Collect used cooking oil in a bottle instead of the sink.
  • Fit hair catchers on shower and floor drains and clean them every few days.
  • Flush only toilet paper.
  • Pour water into rarely used floor drains every week or two, so the trap does not dry out in the heat.
  • Run hot water through the kitchen sink once a week to keep grease from settling.

If the drain is still blocked after the safe steps, the affected drains and what was already tried can be described in one request on khalasna to compare quotes from up to 5 drain unblocking plumbers, for example in Dammam.

Frequently asked questions

Do baking soda and vinegar unblock a drain?

They may freshen a slightly slow drain, but they rarely clear a real blockage of grease, hair or food. A plunger or cleaning the sink trap works better, and it is safer not to combine them with any chemical drain cleaner.

How long does professional drain unblocking take?

A basin or floor drain blockage near the drain is often cleared in 20–45 minutes. A blocked main line, or one that needs a drain machine or jetting, can take a few hours.

Why does a floor drain smell even when it is not blocked?

The trap under a floor drain holds water that blocks sewer gases. In a bathroom that is rarely used, the water evaporates quickly in the Saudi heat. Pouring a bucket of water into the drain restores the seal.

Who pays for a blocked drain in a rented apartment?

Blockages in the shared stack are usually handled by building maintenance, while blockages inside the apartment depend on the tenancy contract. The landlord or building management should hear about it before a plumber is booked.
