Cockroach control in Saudi Arabia: signs, treatment and preparation

Droppings, egg cases and night sightings in the kitchen: how to spot cockroaches early, how treatment works, how to prepare, and what it costs in Saudi Arabia.

khalasna guide6 min readUpdated 25 Oct 2026

The main signs of cockroaches are live insects at night in the kitchen or bathroom, small dark droppings like ground pepper in cabinets and behind appliances, egg cases and a musty smell. A professional treatment usually combines gel bait with a concentrated spray, and one session costs about SAR 200–300 in Riyadh, or about SAR 300–450 with a 3-month warranty that covers return visits.

Cockroaches in Saudi homes are mostly the small, light-brown German cockroach, which lives indoors in kitchens and bathrooms, and the larger reddish-brown American cockroach, which comes up from drains and outdoor areas. Warm temperatures for most of the year let both breed with hardly a break, so early treatment keeps the job small.

Signs to look for

  • Night sightings. Cockroaches hide during the day. One seen in daylight often means a larger population.
  • Droppings. Small dark specks or smears in drawers, on shelves, behind the fridge and under the sink.
  • Egg cases. Small brown capsules in cracks, hinges and behind furniture.
  • Smell. A musty, oily odour in closed cabinets when the infestation is heavy.
  • Shed skins. Light-brown skins near hiding places.

Where to check

A quick check takes about 15 minutes with a torch, ideally an hour after the lights go out.

  1. Under the kitchen sink and around the pipes.
  2. Behind and under the fridge, cooker, dishwasher and washing machine, where the motors keep it warm.
  3. Inside kitchen cabinets, hinges and drawer runners.
  4. Bathroom floor drains, the gap around the toilet and the cabinet under the basin.
  5. Rubbish bin area, store room and the shaft or access door for pipes.

Photos of what is found, with the location, help the pest control company quote more accurately.

How treatment works

MethodHow it worksBest for
Gel baitSmall dots of bait in cracks and hinges. Cockroaches eat it and carry it back to the hiding place.German cockroaches in kitchens and bathrooms; homes with children or pets, since no spraying is needed in living areas.
Residual sprayAn approved insecticide applied to cracks, skirting, drains and hiding places that keeps working for some time.Heavier infestations, American cockroaches, drains and outdoor areas.
Follow-up visitA second treatment, often gel, once new nymphs have hatched from egg cases.Every infestation; one visit rarely reaches the next generation. Warranty packages usually include it.

Store-bought sprays kill the cockroaches that are visible and often scatter the rest into new hiding places. They also make gel bait less attractive if used at the same time.

Why a licensed company matters

In Saudi Arabia, public health pest control is a regulated activity. Companies whose commercial registration covers disinfection and fumigation to exterminate insects and rodents apply through the Balady platform for a qualification certificate to provide public health pest control services. The application covers their technical staff, spraying equipment and whether their pesticides have clearance and registration certificates.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture publishes a list of restricted and banned pesticides. Aluminium phosphide, the tablet fumigant that releases a toxic gas on contact with moisture, is strictly restricted and may be used for storage pests only with the approval and supervision of the competent authority; the Ministry of Commerce has seized it from shops and closed a shop selling it. Before booking:

  • check on the Saudi Business Center (business.sa) that the company's commercial registration is active and covers pest control;
  • ask whether the company holds the Balady qualification for public health pest control;
  • ask which product will be used, and never accept unmarked tablets or a whole-home "fumigation" from an unlicensed seller;
  • a shop or worker selling unlabelled pesticides can be reported to the Ministry of Commerce through the Balagh Tijari app or the unified number 1900.

Preparing the home

  • Empty the treated areas. Kitchen cabinets and drawers are usually emptied so the technician can reach hinges and corners. Food, dishes and cutlery go into sealed boxes or the fridge. Some companies give a discount when cabinets are cleared and food is covered in advance.
  • Clear access. Space behind the fridge and cooker, light furniture moved away from walls, and space under the sinks.
  • Leave during and after spraying. Riyadh companies typically ask for the home to be vacated for 4–5 hours after spraying and then aired for 2–3 hours with the windows open. Infants, pregnant women and anyone with breathing problems stay away for about 6 hours; pets stay out during spraying and airing.
  • After the visit. Sprayed surfaces are not wiped with water for a few days, so the treatment keeps working. Gel dots should be left in place.
  • Building and neighbours. In apartment buildings, cockroaches move between flats through shafts and drains. Telling the landlord or building management helps when the problem keeps returning.

What it costs and what to ask

TreatmentTypical price
Cockroach treatment (gel + concentrated spray), one sessionSAR 200–300
Same, with 3-month warrantySAR 300–450
General spraying, 1- to 3-room apartmentSAR 150–350
General spraying, villa from 4 to 7+ roomsSAR 250–500

Prices are from a Riyadh pest control company's 2026 list for a single session; warranty packages cost more and include follow-up visits if insects return. Before agreeing, it is worth asking each company:

  1. Is the company licensed for public health pest control, and is its commercial registration active?
  2. How many visits are included, and how long is the warranty?
  3. Which product is used, and how long should the home stay empty?
  4. What happens if cockroaches return during the warranty?
  5. Is 15% VAT included in the price?

Wider problems such as ants, bed bugs or rodents are covered on the pages for general pest control, bed bug treatment and rodent control. The guide on how to hire a home service pro covers payment and checks for the day of the job.

Keeping them away

  • Fix dripping taps and leaks under sinks: cockroaches need water.
  • Store food in closed containers and take the rubbish out every evening.
  • Close floor drains with covers or keep water in the trap; dry traps let cockroaches and smells in.
  • Seal gaps around pipes under the sink and behind the toilet.
  • Do not store cardboard boxes in the kitchen or store room.

When the signs are there, the problem can be described once on khalasna to get up to 5 quotes from cockroach control companies, for example in Jeddah.

Frequently asked questions

How long after cockroach treatment can the kitchen be used?

It depends on the product, so the company's instructions apply. Riyadh companies typically ask for the home to be vacated for 4–5 hours and aired for 2–3 hours, and sprayed surfaces are not wiped with water for a few days.

Why are there more cockroaches right after treatment?

Treatment drives cockroaches out of their hiding places, so more may be seen for a few days. If numbers do not fall after the follow-up visit, the company should return under the warranty.

Is cockroach treatment safe for children and pets?

It is when a licensed company uses registered products and the instructions are followed. Gel bait in cracks is often preferred in homes with children or pets, and infants and pets stay out of treated rooms until the company says otherwise.

Who pays for pest control in a rented apartment?

It depends on the tenancy contract and the building. Some buildings run regular treatments of common areas; treatment inside the apartment is often arranged by the tenant unless the contract says otherwise.
